Philips Ultrasound Laboratory
Mohawk College and Philips Medical Systems Canada confirm partnership in ultrasound education.

Mohawk College and Philips Medical Systems Canada have confirmed a partnership that calls for almost $1.3 million in equipment and support services for the College's ultrasound lab. In recognition of this partnership, the lab was named the Philips Ultrasound Lab.

"This is a wonderful example of collaboration between education and industry, " said Diane Barrafato, the academic manager responsible for Mohawk's diagnostic imaging programs. "This partnership will ensure many ultrasound classes and graduates will acquire scanning skills on leading-edge ultrasound equipment and become comfortable with digital ultrasound applications which is the future for all diagnostic imaging services."

As well, Ms. Barrafato acknowledged that the partnership provides an ideal location - a college-university health sciences campus - for Philips to showcase its line of ultrasound products and for Mohawk College to offer joint educational programs and training for Philips' customers. The equipment provided by Philips - four ultrasound systems - represent the company's current line of products and will allow students to perform all forms of ultrasound examinations, such as abdominal, pelvic, cardiac, vascular, etc.

Mohawk College - the largest educational centre in Ontario for the training of professionals in Sonography and medical radiation technology, and Philips - one of the world's leading manufacturers of medical diagnostic imaging equipment and other healthcare services - see value in such a partnership.
"As we move forward together, we have an opportunity to create an integrated vision for delivering quality healthcare to Canadians," said Philips spokesperson Catherine Hunter.

Mohawk College offers a four year collaborative diploma/degree program in Medical Radiation Sciences with McMaster University in the disciplines of Ultrasound and Medical Radiation Technology and Radiation Therapy, as well as a one year graduate certificate program in Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography. These programs produce highly skilled healthcare graduates who are vital to ensuring patient care and safety while providing the Canadian Healthcare System with superior diagnostic imaging services.
